Dr. Viral Patel, MD, FACG, believes good gastroenterology care should be straightforward: clear answers, sensible next steps, and no more testing or treatment than a patient actually needs. He joined the Charlotte Gastro physician team in January 2019 and focuses on giving patients practical, evidence-based guidance they can act on with confidence. Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Patel is an active advocate for patients and serves on national committees for the American College of Gastroenterology, including the ACG Education Committee.
Dr. Patel grew up in a military family, which meant moving frequently and living in different parts of the world as a child. After earning his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, he spent time teaching high school math and chemistry before pursuing medicine. During his residency, he had the opportunity to consult for McKinsey and Company — an experience that sparked a lasting interest in quality improvement within gastroenterology. That focus continues to shape his approach today: he strives for efficient, effective care and the best possible outcomes for his patients. He has authored numerous journal publications and presented at professional society meetings throughout his career.
Dr. Patel's is married with two children. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, hiking, traveling, cooking, golf, and writing, and stays curious about emerging technology. He's also an avid sports fan, following NFL football and college basketball.
